Last week was my birthday week...so I'm combining last week and this week into one fun and dandy new on Bluray and DVD. Home Screening Room. Let's get to it...shall we!!!

Pick Of The Week
If you pick one movie this week … this is it.

Philomena / Rated PG-13 / Judi Dench, Steve Coogan
A formerly high-profile journalist digs into an unbelievable story of a woman who had her son taken from her years earlier at a Catholic convent. While it seems far-fetched, this investigation will lead to something deeper and darker than anyone imagined. The incomparable Judi Dench delivers a magnificent performance alongside Steve Coogan that will have you loving the film for the performances they deliver. (Grade: B+)

Other Big Releases
The Nut Job / Rated PG / Voices of Will Arnett, Liam Neeson
Banned from the park that was his home, Surly the Squirrel sets out to help provide for the animals that turned their back on him. Can he overcome a gang trying to pull a bank robbery and get back in the good graces of his animal friends?

Ride Along / Rated PG-13 / Kevin Hart, Ice Cube
It’s a long-held tradition, getting the family blessing when you want to marry a woman. But Ben must get the blessing of Angela’s brother James, a cop on the streets of Atlanta who will be taking Ben on the ride-along of his life.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty / Rated PG / Ben Stiller, Kristen Wiig
Walter’s days are uneventful and even a bit boring, but this is about to change. As he sets out on a journey to find a missing negative, the trip he embarks on will take him places that he used to only dream about.

Hidden Gem(s)
Better Living Through Chemistry / Not Rated / Sam Rockwell, Olivia Wilde
Doug (Rockwell) takes over his father-in-law's pharmacy, well kinda. You see is father-in-law is not quite ready to relinquish everything about the pharmacy and Doug's mundane life just continues. But one day, doing deliveries in the small town, Doug meets Elizabeth (Wilde). She coerces him into experimenting with the drugs he distributes and the sex he doesn't get at home. But when the feds come to town to investigate the pharmacy, will everything come crashing down on Doug? This has a lot of black humor in it and I really ahd fun, probably more than I should have. But for a title that didn't take the box office by storm, this might just be the hidden gem you are looking for. (Grade: B)

The Hooping Life / Not Rated / Anah (Hoopalicious), Christabel (HoopGirl)
When you think hula hoops, the vision is that of a 1950s black and white era. Today it is simply hooping. Experience modern hooping along with stories of being saved from depression and gangs amid the culture around a simple hoop. Part outrageous, part encouraging, all hoops. I guarantee, if you take a look at this little slice of life, you will never look at a hula hoop the same way again. Not really for kids as some of the places they go are ... well not for kids. But that doesn't mean as an adult you can't go back and enjoy the hoop for all it has to offer. (Grade: B+)

The Trials of Muhammad Ali / Not Rated / Muhammad Ali
The world swirled with every action of Muhammad Ali’s life: from the controversial moment he joined the Nation of Islam to changing his name from Cassius Clay and his refusal to fight in Vietnam. This comes from Kartemquin Films, the amazing documentary company that gave us Hoop Dreams and The Interrupters and is, I believe, one of the best documentary producers in America today.

Home Screening Room - Back with Smaug, a Grudge Match and a visit to Osage County

Home Screening Room - 4/7/14

Now on Blu-ray / DVD / Combo Packs / Digitally or in so many different formats for your home that I can’t count….

Pick Of The Week
If you pick one movie this week … this is it.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug/ Rated PG-13 / Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen
The second film in the trilogy takes us to meet the dragon Smaug that was hinted at in “The Hobbit.” The journey is long, but far from boring. While the first film was a bit of a letdown, this swing hits the nail on the head. Gandalf, Bilbo and even Legolas show up in this journey that will excite the senses and leave viewers yearning for the third film. (Grade: B+)

Big Releases
August: Osage County / Rated R / Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts
A dysfunctional family comes together due to a family crisis. It is in that moment the matriarch shows just how crazy she can make everyone’s life. Incredible acting performances shine in this extremely dark comedy.

Grudge Match / Rated PG-13 / Sylvester Stallone, Robert De Niro
Imagine two of the greatest fighters of all time coming together to fight 30 years after their last battle. Then imagine those fighters being played by two heavyweight actors. Kevin Hart is along to deliver plenty of comedic shots in this bout that sometimes plays fun.

Justin Bieber’s Believe / Rated PG / Justin Bieber, Scooter Braun
A trip behind the scenes with the oft-in-the-news pop star from director Jon M. Chu gives the viewer a mix of concert footage and quality time. Chu directed Bieber’s 2011 documentary Justin Bieber: Never Say Never as well.
