Home Screening Room - Heaven is for Real but watch out for Sabotage

Ahh, a slowish week this week with the new releases, but it's good to get a chance to see the films that didn't do big box office in the theaters. Heaven is for Real did big box office, and I will have more on that later. This week will have action on your mind though!

Pick of the Week
Sabotage / Rated R / Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sam Worthington
When members of an elite DEA task force take down a cartel leader, they are able to seize a large sum of money. But when money goes missing, agents begin to die. Who is killing the members of Breacher’s team? Good to see Schwarzenegger back in films. Although he feels a bit old here in this one, he surrounds himself with talented young action stars that make the film go. Although not a perfect film by any means, it does give you a real throwback to the films that Schwarzenegger made famous.

Also This Week
Heaven Is for Real / Rated PG / Greg Kinnear, Kelly Reilly
Based on the No. 1 New York Timesbest-selling book, this is the true story of a boy in a small town who has a near-death experience and claims to have seen things in heaven that he couldn’t have known about. Now everyone, including his father, struggles with understanding what heaven is.

-->
Transcendence / Rated PG-13 / Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall
Dr. Will Caster leads the way in the research into artificial intelligence. His research looks to combine every piece of knowledge with human emotion. When extremists target him, will it actually be the catalyst for something much bigger? Though peppered with an incredible cast, this film gets lost along the way with a confusing story and meandering narrative.

Tyler Perry’s The Single Moms Club / Rated PG-13 / Nia Long, Amy Smart
Being single can be tough, but being a single mom can be brutal. Five ladies join forces to support each other in this challenging endeavor. They struggle, laugh, talk dates and cry together all in the hope of becoming better people.

Plus
The Angriest Man in Brooklyn / Rated R / Robin Williams, Mila Kunis
Cesar Chavez / Rated PG-13 / Michael Peña, America Ferrera
Dom Hemingway / Rated R / Jude Law, Richard E. Grant
Make Your Move / Rated PG-13 / Derek Hough, BoA

Hidden Gem
Blue Ruin / Rated R / Macon Blair, Devin Ratray
Ok, I'm guessing you have never heard of this film. Very few have, despite having a strong pedigree of Film Festival wins and showings. Revenge is on the mind of Dwight as his childhood rears its ugly head with the release of the person he believes to have killed his family. Now it's time for revenge, but the story will lead you down many roads, can you find the answers? This is a violent and yet quiet journey though one man's quest to protect those he loves, and eliminate those that would hurt them. A beautiful vision onscreen that stands a look for those fans of the genre.

Home Screening Room - It's a Rio kinda week

A thin week on the new release front, but far and away the best title coming down the pike is Rio 2.
Pick Of The Week
If you pick one movie this week … this is it.

Rio 2 / Rated G / Voices of Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway
Blu and Jewel take the family to the wilds of the Amazon rainforest after discovering they aren’t the only blue macaws left. In fact, the jungles are brimming with life and a variety of birds to fly and sing with, including Jewel’s father. Music, laughter and fun are the order of the day for these animals, and you, too, will be humming along with some of the musical selections. The colors and sounds will explode into your living room. Although I didn't find the magic that existed in Rio, I did appreciate the music and colors of the newer film. It's one of those titles that will be enjoyable for the most part but stays a step below being memorable. It's definitely the best of the week though. (Grade: B-)

The Face of Love / Rated PG-13 / Annette Bening, Ed Harris

A Night in Old Mexico / Not Rated / Robert Duvall, Jeremy Irvine

Under the Skin / Rated R / Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy McWilliams

Home Screening Room - Bad Words Reign Supreme

Ah, this week... it's time to use Bad Words in this column...I'm normally a very laid back individual and bad words are not part of my vocabulary. But this week I can use Bad Words. Okay, so I've taken all the life out of that joke by now. But make no mistake, I really enjoyed the film and think it "could" become a cult classic. Throw in the action sequel The Raid 2 and you've got a couple sneaky interesting movies being released. And a hidden gem featuring a film for the Christian music fans out there. What a cross-section of films!

And before I get into the rest of this week...make sure you watch the trailers below...that Stage Fright film is kinda a horror movie with Minnie Driver and Meat Loaf -- I would see it if I had it...but alas they didn't send me that one....but check out the trailer below in the trailers this week.

Pick Of The Week
If you pick one movie this week … this is it.

Bad Words / Rated R / Jason Bateman, Kathryn Hahn
Spelling bees are for kids, right? Not to 40-year-old Guy Trilby. In an attempt to take the national spelling bee title, Guy exploits a rule that the contestant must not have passed the eighth grade. Along the way he meets a competitor and decides to impart his knowledge of life to the boy. Jason Bateman’s directorial debut is raw, raunchy and in no way politically correct. The humor will make some cringe and others double over in laughter, maybe even at the same time. I spell it F-U-N-N-Y. I really bellieve that Bad Words "could" become a cult classic and be watched as a late night comedy for years to come. Get in on it N-O-W! (Grade: B+)

Also This Week
Don Peyote / Rated R / Dan Fogler, Wallace Shawn
An ordinary man has an extraordinary encounter that leads him to a different level of consciousness. Is he crazy? Or is he just on a journey that is at a higher level that none of us has experienced?

Jodorowsky’s Dune / Rated PG-13 / Alejandro Jodorowsky
Cult film director Alejandro Jodorowsky discusses the film that he never made. Many of the stories that surrounded the film were larger that life much like his series of graphical storyboards that he had created to pitch this film.

The Raid 2 / Rated PG-13 / Iko Uwais, Arifin Putra
First he fought his way out of a building and left bodies in his wake. The rookie Jakarta cop, Rama, thought that was the end and normalcy would resume in his life. He was wrong. Expect more violence as Rama must insert himself deep into the criminal underworld.

Plus
Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa .5 / Not Rated / Johnny Knoxville, Jackson Nicoll
Le Week-End / Rated R / Jim Broadbent, Lindsay Duncan
Stage Fright / Rated R / Minnie Driver, Meat Loaf

Hidden Gem
Ragamuffin / Rated PG-13 / Michael Koch, David Schultz
A movie about Rich Mullins. To some readers, this may mean nothing special, but to Christian music fans, Mullins became one of the biggest names in the industry. The story covers his growth from a child to become one of the biggest names in Christian music. His childhood was by no means a perfect upbringing. But he loved to sing, and felt that was his way to express himself. When the call came in from superstar Amy Grant that she wanted to record one of his songs, he knew things were about to change. But would this help him with the inner demons he was fighting as many artists do. This may have a limited appeal in the marketplace, but for those in that limited group this is a solid story of the rise of a true original in the Christian music market. Although it is a bit too long and drawn out in trying to get it's message across, for those fans I think it is a worthy tribute to the career of a unique man.
