A quick look at the awards season

So the first big weekend of the awards season is over and things have crystallized a bit.

The Critics’ Choice Movie Awards saw big wins for The Fighter in the supporting categories with both Christian Bale and Melissa Leo walking away with awards, while Colin Firth and Natalie Portman sprinted to the head of their respective categories.

And what of picture and director, The Social Network and David Fincher seemed to grab hold of the situation with big wins in the big categories.

On the Golden Globes side of things, the same folks won the awards in the dramatic categories. The only difference for them is comedy categories that brought The Kids Are Alright back into play.

So what does this mean for the Oscar’s? With nominations due next week, we’ll see, but things are getting pretty settled. The cream is rising to the top and each of the organizations is seeing it. Other things are always possible but here’s what looks to be the big six.

PictureThe Social Network
Director – David Fincher, The Social Network
Actor – Colin Firth, The King’s Speech
Actress – Natalie Portman, Black Swan
Supporting Actor – Christian Bale, The Fighter
Supporting Actress – Melissa Leo, The Fighter

Sure, maybe Amy Adams sneaks into the mix or another surprise crops up, but it looks like the only surprises left this award season is who gets nominated and not who wins.
