Real Milwaukee - 5/25/13

Yes it seems I've been hiding lately, but that's not true.

I've been busy despite traveling around this great country.

Still talked with my friends in and around the Seattle area plus all the great people at KMOX in St. Louis with Mark Reardon...but it had been around a month since I had been back to the Real
Milwaukee set.

Heck radio I can be on the phone from anywhere...but TV you actually have to go to the set...or have a camera come out to the airport....where I was the last couple of Friday mornings.

So when I got into the set for this past Friday's show, I was a bit squirrly missing you all.

I did sneak out to see Tony Clark off earlier in the week at his live remote, but I didn't stick around to air time. I did get to talk with some great fans out there though...so that was cool.

What did I bring with me to the show this week? Reviews of The Hangover Part III (not nearly as bad as some people say it is...), Fast and Furioius 6 (I kinda dug it, but man it has some terrible dialogue), and new Bluray/DVD releases for Side Effects, Mama, and Deep in the Heart.

PLUS -- hitting up the Facebook page will give you a chance to win a copy of this true story.

Watch the video (linked below) and hit up the Facebook page to enter to win a copy of the movie.

Real Milwaukee - 2/22/13

I went over the hills...through the snow...and found myself at FOX 6 this morning for Real Milwaukee...but I COULDN'T stop myself from raging about A Good Day To Die Hard. Yes, I'm obsessed...video below or through the linky. Plus the first look at who I think WILL win the Awards this weekend.

2012 .. The 12 Best of 12!

Ah 2012…you’ve been good to us at the movies.

Even the bad movies have been good, in their own ways.

Movies like Battleship (big, loud and tons of action…despite its problems). Rock of Ages – which was glorious 80s hair band rock despite the problems that were there.

But on the good side, I had 4 big titles that I had considered for my top spot…and even as I’m typing this, I wonder if I've got them in the right order.

This year…with it being 2012…I decided to have a Top 12 of 2012. That said…there’s at least 12 other films that I wanted to give some love to … so here’s the films that didn't quite make the top 12 list.

In no particular order…
The Hunger Games, Moonrise Kingdom, Safety Not Guaranteed, The Invisible War, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Detropia, Perks of Being a Wallflower, Smashed, The Sessions, Celeste and Jesse Forever, This is Forty and Life of Pi

All these films had something extra special about them that made an impression with me…but I limited myself to 12 and some had to go…if I did this list another day…films like Life of Pi and Beasts of the Southern Wild could be on my list…but they are not.

Also there is a big * on the list. As of this writing I had not seen Django Unchained. It could have made my list, so I reserve the right to later add an extra title if I feel it is worthy after I get to see it. It was not offered to screen prior to the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards nominations.

So what did make the list…well here you go… my favorites of 2012.

12. Pitch Perfect
I really expected nothing from this film. Literally just another meaningless teen comedy was all I anticipated when I sat down in the theater. Instead I got a smart, witty and repeatedly watchable film that took movies like Mean Girls and Bring It On and mashed it up with the success of shows like Glee to create something that will be enjoyed for years.

11. 21 Jump Street
You always run the risk when you remake a television show that you anger the fans of that show. When Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill were taking on the roles I was worried the fun would be gone. But boy was I wrong. Jonah Hill took pride and ownership in the original thought and made it something fun and yet still maintained its integrity. Funny and an altogether laugh riot, Jump Street will be watchable again and again.

10. Skyfall
Bond is back and the first scene in the film is so intense that you’ll just wonder how it can maintain the excitement. It does and with a great villain like Javier Bardem on board for the ride, it’s a film that even folks who aren’t fans of the Bond films. Daniel Craig rocks as Bond and you will leave shaken…not stirred.

9. Ted
This film is wrong on so many levels. But that is what makes it so right. No denying, Seth MacFarlane can make people laugh with edgy and fun humor. Ted is a talking bear that looks like the perfect childhood friend; that belongs NOWHERE near your children as he is as raunchy as it gets. But if you are an adult…this could be just your cup of stuffed fun.

8. Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God

The second year in a row that my favorite documentary of the year was shown to me at the Milwaukee Film Festival and that is a testament to the documentary programming crew there. The story of priest sex abuse in Wisconsin and how some very diligent individuals searched for justice is truly fascinating and heartbreaking at once. Director Alex Gibney has a way with telling stories like this that shows an extremely rare combination of heart and empathy to go along with the pit bull nature of the facts. This film will not leave you silent after you see it.

7. Wreck-It Ralph
My favorite animated film this year, Wreck-It Ralph has the ability to combine the modern animation capabilities with classic games and keep the classic game motions intact. Voices are spot on, colors bright and vibrant and the right mix of comedy, music, story, and visuals make this my favorite animated journey this year. You won’t wreck your night watching this film.

6. Looper

Rian Johnson delivers probably one of the most underrated scripts this year and a sci-fi journey like nothing you’ve seen before. Joseph Gordon-Leavitt and Bruce Willis hit their roles out of the park and it’s a film that needs to be seen multiple times to truly be appreciated for all of its subtleties. A wonderful journey that when it’s over you feel like you need to go forward in time to tell your future self how good it is.

5. The Dark Knight Rises
After the last Batman film, The Dark Knight, there were a number of folks that looked at this and were disappointed. But this film goes deeper into Batman and doesn’t rely on the bad guy. Bane is interesting, but of course, he doesn’t hold the overwhelming charisma that Heath Ledger brought as the Joker. But the new characters portrayed by Anne Hathaway and Joseph Gordon-Leavitt are a great addition. This is Christian Bale’s movie, and he rises from the shadows of Ledger.

4. Silver Linings Playbook
Any of the top 4 movies on my list could be interchanged. I could make a case for Silver Linings Playbook as my favorite film this year just as easily as the next three films. Jennifer Lawrence grows up here and is spectacular. Bradley Cooper does things that we have rarely seen from him before and you just want to embrace him. And with a supporting cast including Robert Deniro, Jacki Weaver and Chris Tucker…it is well worth the time. Study your playbook, this film has more than a silver lining.

3. Lincoln

Steven Spielberg’s labor of love is an amazing cinematic journey. The period leading up to the abolishment of slavery lends itself to an incredible film. And when your film features the best acting performance of the year in Daniel Day-Lewis alongside supporting performances from Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones and a cast that is one of the best of the year. This is an amazing piece that will stand the test of time and should be watched. History is kind to us as moviegoers in Lincoln.

2. Zero Dark Thirty

What can I say about Kathryn Bigelow? She is amazing. Can I profess my love now? Whatever she does I want to see, especially if there is a military focus. The story of the search for Osama Bin Laden and one woman’s quest to not give up the fight is an amazing look at a complex situation. Spanning 10 years, the film does an incredible job of showing the drive and determination of one woman amidst the changing landscape. Jessica Chastain drives the search for the most notorious criminal in recent history. This military action/drama/thriller will have you thirsting for more.

1. Argo

I really loved this film. The tale that Director Ben Affleck brings to life will intrigue and entertain. The Iran hostage crisis was really focused around the large group and the largely unknown story of the covert operation that created a science fiction film as the backbone of a miraculous rescue. The story behind Hollywood’s help of our government in their time of need makes for good film. Affleck is becoming extremely more and more adept at creating a story and crafting a tale in such a manner that appeals to a broad audience. There is an excellent supporting cast here with John Goodman and Alan Arkin among others and with Affleck in the lead, the film is in good hands. The line in the movie is “argo” eff you self….well you won’t need to do that after seeing this one. Instead I say “argo” tell a friend as this is one of the best of the year.

So there you have it…my take on some of the best movies of 2012 – There are others I didn’t mention here as well, that were VERY good films…but you eventually have to stop with these things…so that’s what we do. I really had a good time at the movies this year…and I can’t wait to see what 2013 has in store for us!

Until then, Sit Back, Relax and Save Me A Seat.

12 Film Misses of 2012

So when I sit down to write about the worst films of the year – I've changed my tact. It’s not a true worst list on some levels…it’s more of a misses of 2012. These are titles that just didn't connect with me for whatever reason. They may have connected with someone, somewhere…but if they did…I don’t know how…so let’s look at some of the misses of 2012. These are the worst 12 in my mind of 12.

12. The Woman in Black
Daniel Radcliffe stars in this horror/thriller that is just plain boring. I was never scared, amused or enthralled at all. Just wanted to get it over with and that’s not a good thing when it comes to a film.

11. Savages
The first of a couple titles that conflict me this year. I love the risks that Oliver Stone takes in film-making  but when they miss…they really miss. Savages felt like an over the top and extremely gratuitous film that used shock and some good actors to try to get ahead. Instead it was only the gratuitous things that stuck with me.

10. The Three Stooges
I have to admit to being a real fan of even marginal Farrelly Brothers . That’s why The effort of The Three Stooges was such a let down. Sure it has some fun moments in it, but they are fleeting and find a way to annoy as much as fill with laughter. But this is nowhere near the worst film of the year…when I get to that one I may be begging for Moe to poke my eyes out.

9. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance
Did we really need a sequel here? Really?

8. John Carter
Big, bold and beautiful, John Carter forgot one thing, it needed to be interesting.

7. Sparkle
Ok, I know this was Whitney Houston’s last performance and I should be nice…fact is it was not a good way to go out. A film that features a really good singer like Jordin Sparks but doesn't let her belt it out until the last 15-20 minutes. And when one of your most impactful dramatic sequences is shot in slow motion and elicits laughter instead of tension or tears…that’s not a good thing.

6. Alex Cross
I wanted to like Alex Cross, I wanted to like Tyler Perry in this role, I wanted a lot of things I didn't get here…argh.

5. What to Expect When You’re Expecting

Comedies are always a bit of a crap shoot  but one of the ways we try to beat something that is put together badly…get a lot of names in the cast. This film includes Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks, Chace Crawford, Brooklyn Decker, Anna Kendrick PLUS Dennis Quaid and Chris Rock among others. But all those actors can’t save the comedy that lacks the funny.

4. Fun Size
This is half here because it lacks a lot of the fun that even the title wants us to believe we will have. But more so this film hits my list as the one with the WORST marketing campaigns of the year. Advertised during shows that 8 year olds frequently watch for a film that is a SOLID PG-13 was just a mistake. And when the movie tries to be one part Adventures in Babysittingand one part Superbad…it ends up being a mess of king size proportions.

3. Cosmopolis
Director David Cronenberg gives us Robert Pattinson riding around in a limo for 90 odd minutes as characters come and go. And yes – one of the first times I've seen a prostate exam in a limo in a film that I can remember. I've liked Cronenberg’s work in the past, most times, and have never been a huge fan of Pattinson. While some critics fawned over this film, I felt like it was me, getting a prostate exam in the theater.

2. Project X
Ok, so this should be the biggest miss I saw in theaters this year. Really it should. Yet another film trying to capture the magic of the teen partying, Project X just falls flat. It was all there. An unknown cast, a soundtrack that was as hip as they could make it and yet someone forgot to tell them that a comedy needs humor! Ahh what a waste of time watching this one for me, they should have sent me vodka with this one, it may have helped me get into the partying mood.

1. Piranha 3DD

It’s not really fair to put this film in the company of a number that tried real hard and just missed. Piranha 3DD was bad from the get go, but as a whole, I think it was ok with that. Imagine this…killer piranha make their way into a highly chlorinated water park. The water park is run by a man (David Koechner) who brings in strippers as lifeguards.  And the best part of this film? David Hasselhoff  (as himself) comes to the park to be the honorary lifeguard at the grand opening. Even sitting up in the lifeguard chair as chaos erupts. Throw in a number of fun character actors and you've got a complete cast of crazies for this crazy film. Now that said it does get gory and disgusting from time to time and that helps to do it in. You could be praying for a piranha to gnaw on you before this movie ends!

That's just 12 that I think missed the mark. I don't relish writing this piece every year because on virtually each one of these films, there are some very talented folks that tried to make something special and succeed. Fact is, they didn't -- at least in my mind...and my job is to let you guys know. NOW...you may want to have a bad movie party as well and search these titles out....and if you're looking for a bad movie party hit, Piranha 3DD is probably it.

Thanks for a great 2012.

2013 will bring more good, bad, and truly different.

15 Years Online -- Thank YOU!

15 Years!
Circa 2000.

Wow May 2012 will mark 15 years of putting reviews and commentaries online for yours truly. The beginning of the Common Guy’s Film Reviews featured yours truly writing in a world that didn’t have a million websites. (maybe just half a million).

See the website circa 2000 (yes I used to program my own HTML code) and the little icon that drove traffic to my site -- PLUS details on a great contest and more -- after the jump.

When my site was listed by Yahoo! – Yes the dominant search engine of the time and the little (NEW) icon was next to it…I received more hits in a week than I did in many moons. But of course…at that point…if you searched in Yahoo! Under film reviews I was on top of the list.

I started on a whim. After many years of telling folks my opinion on movies working at Blockbuster Video and the independent Double Feature Video along with a gas station that rented movies (Benco), I felt it was time to take those opinions to the masses…hello WWW.

In the beginning there was no commonguy.com – just http://www.ticon.net/~bugzy. (The site no longer exists…so no need to click there).

The site in 2000 as show on the WayBack Machine.
My reviews were picked up by http://www.rottentomatoes.com and I was off and running. Never to imagine where I am today. Over the next month I will share pieces of that journey...for those of you who have been around my site for a while, you may remember them...others...will be in for some surprises.

To celebrate during the entire month (May 2012 in case you are reading this in 2015 or something), I will be reminiscing about a number of things that have happened along the way. But that’s not all.

To celebrate 15 years – I’ll give away a $15 ITunes gift card and 15 other assorted goodies that I’ve picked up through the years…I’ve got old movie shirts (don’t worry…they were never worn), a couple of unopened DVDs and maybe I’ll round up some more goodies from some of my studio friends throughout the month.

My commitment to you during May.
-       a new post daily (sometimes it will be a review – sometimes it will be a normal column…sometimes some pieces on years gone by.
-       Constantly updated Facebook and Twitter pages – have you “liked” http://facebook.com/CommonGuyFilmReviewsyet? Why not…do it now.
-       Follow me on Twitter for a number of quick and new comments throughout the month. Have you followed me on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/commonguymoviesyet? Always fun and quick quips there.
-       Plus I’m announcing that I am beginning work on the first outlines of a book about life as a film critic (that doesn’t have a big name). I’ll have stories of my experiences throughout the years that many have heard, but now they’ll all be in one place.

Follow all month! Tell your friends. There are great giveaways coming! I’d love to double the Facebook and Twitter “likes and Followers” before the month is out, and with your help – that will be possible.

Thanks all – see you tomorrow!

Real Milwaukee Visit -- 11/11/11

Milwaukee Film Festival 2011 (MY Film Festival -- Day 1)

It’s Time For MyFilm Festival

Everyone and their brother it seems, other than me, has just returned from the wonderful Toronto International Film Festival, and of course I longed to have been there.

But despite the fact that I couldn’t get to Toronto; I have a festival to keep me busy for the next week PLUS. It’s the Milwaukee Film Festival and it’s running September 22 – October 2 at various theaters around the city.
Remember I wrote the piece earlier this year that even if you can make the biggies like Toronto, Sundance, SXSW, Telluride or Cannes – you CAN still get to a fest in your own backyard. (CHECK OUT THE PIECE FROM EARLIER THIS YEAR).

This year the Milwaukee Film Festival branches out a bit to have a full run at the Marcus Ridge cinema in the Milwaukee suburb of New Berlin. I happen to live in New Berlin…so…since I’m going to be spending a lot of time at that theater, I view this as MY film festival. (Even though I didn’t program it…my OTHER film festival is usually at home with a number of films that just I want to watch.)

The only bummer about a hometown film festival is that you still have regular responsibilities to family and other tasks and can’t fully engulf yourself in the festival. But that’s ok; it just means there are some days I had to cross off attending films this year. Disappointed, a little – but my tentative schedule has nearly 20 films in it…and that’s not bad at all.

Gala opening night is tonight with the feature Natural Selection (but alas this is one of the nights I can’t make).

Watch as the days pass by and I talk about a number of the films. I may even have some pictures, video and chats with directors and stars.

What am I looking forward to on my tentative schedule?
Lots and lots of documentaries!

What am I disappointed for on the schedule?
None of the Cream City films are showing out at the Ridge…I do have a chance to see Points of Interest via a link from director Jon Salimes (so I’ll have some comments on that)

Sad to miss?
Natural Selection and We Need To Talk About Kevin (both due to personal schedule conflicts.

First Film on my schedule?

Last Film On My Schedule?
Who knows how much I make it through…but looking for Louder Than A Bomb and possibly Into Eternity.

If you go...please say HI to me...I won't bite, I promise! (As long as it's not in the middle of a movie either in person or on a cell phone.) I have a big pass on that you can see from a mile away so you'll know it's me.

Watch as the days go by and I give you a taste of some of the films in the 2011 Milwaukee Film Festival.

My Favorite Oprah Winfrey Show Episode

My moment on Oprah!

I know this is a movie blog, but I have to share my Oprah story. With her show coming to an end people are asking for your favorite episode, and I say…the ONE I WAS ON!

Fifteen years ago this month, I had a whirlwind that will never be forgotten. I was brought on, as a kind of guest, to the Oprah Winfrey show. How did this happen you ask? Read On.

I was lucky enough to win a chance to audition for Wheel of Fortune (yes this is the Oprah story, be patient). This was a show that I watched with my Grandma and played since I was a tot! The audition process wasn’t tough enough that we found out Oprah’s crew was there to and she was filming for an upcoming segment on what it takes to get on a game show. So not only did we have the stress of the audition process, but the Oprah show was there!

After the audition process was complete, Oprah’s crew did some exit interviews with us and we were sent on our way.

Shortly after the audition I got a call that Oprah’s producers wanted me to come to Chicago. So I started making plans. Where to park, where to go, where is the studio….when I received another call, that they would be sending a car for me and my family.

Ok, so this got a little better – So my Mom (who was also a big wheel watcher with me and my grandma) and my brother Bob that could make it at the time were ready to go. I expected maybe a van, perhaps taking myself and a couple of the other people who auditioned to show up at my house. Instead…yep you guessed it, a stretch limo for my family alone. Oprah spared NO expense.

Arriving in Chicago we were whisked into our seats in the audience (there were 6-8 of us from the audition that were invited to the show). So we were all together to do a brief segment. Yes my ugly mug showed up in the highlight package that led into things and then, without warning, Oprah pulled the big moment that she knew which of us were making Wheel of Fortune. It was ALL OF US.

Talk about elation, there you have it…and it wasn’t until later that we found out that the producers didn’t even know we had made the show until that morning. Seems the Oprah producers and the Wheel producers were looking for the same type of individual and they were good judges of what went on.

My charismatic debut on Oprah, led to an appearance on Wheel of Fortune. And to this day…that will still be my FAVORITE Oprah episode ever.

Thanks Oprah!
