Home Screening Room - Hugo meets a Reborn Johnny English at an American Sleepover

This Week’s Big Releases

Hugo on DVD/BluRay
Feb. 28
Hugo – Rated PG (Asa Butterfield, Chloe Moretz, Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen)
The winner of 5 Academy Awards comes to your home and is worth picking up. A movie I said I adored when I left the theater, it’s hard to recommend. Why? It’s a movie lovers movie, but the pacing won’t agree with many. Made my top films of the year and is absolutely worth a look for anyone who has yet to experience it now that it’s on DVD/BluRay.

Johnny English Reborn – Rated PG (Rowan Atkinson, Gillian Anderson, Rosamund Pike)
Johnny English was a film that needed a sequel. Ok, maybe that’s not true...but it got one anyway and is now on DVD/BluRay. Rowan Atkinson is obviously a very funny guy and if this family friendly spy/comedy is your type of movie, go to it and grab it up.

Also new this week…

Answers to Nothing – Rated R (Dane Cook, Julie Benz, Elizabeth Mitchell) Do you wonder where Dane Cook has been? Well here’s your answer.

Beneath the Darkness  – Rated R (Dennis Quaid, Aimee Teegarden)

Bounty Hunters  - Rated R (Trish Stratus) – Ahh Trish Stratus…yippee.

I Melt With You  – Rated R (Thomas Jane, Jeremy Piven, Carla Gugino) I see the word debauchery, and I’m in.

Justice League: Doom – Rated PG-13 (Nathan Fillion, Claudia Black)

WWE Royal Rumble 2012 – Not Rated Get ready for Wrestlemania by reliving this year’s Royal Rumble

And Finally

The Myth of the American Sleepover – Not Rated (Jade Ramsey, Amy Seimetz)

I’ve wanted to see this film since it premiered at SXSW in 2010, now it’s available on DVD. This is the touching story of young teens searching for life and love as summer comes to a close; it could be nothing, but I really can’t wait to check out this festival favorite.
Check out the trailer below.

Pick of the Week

Pick up Hugo– you won’t be disappointed if you love the movies.

Thanks!

Final thoughts on the 84th Academy Awards

Thoughts on the 84th Academy Awards

-       The Artist, as expected, is the big winner on the evening. Though it tied with Hugo for the most awards (5 each) it took home the more significant awards by far.

Crystal hosted for the 9th time.
-       Billy Crystal, despite being met with scathing critiques by a number of individuals was ready to go and delivered what everyone should have expected. A by the books performance that took some shots, but also let Billy wax poetic about Gil Cates (a nice touch).

-       The montages, really??? While some were clever and funny…we rush Octavia Spencer off the stage so that we can see another montage that features an attempt to reel in the younger set with a lonesome Twilight clip that was WAY out of place.

-       As I tweeted last night, I still think Robert Richardson, who won Best Cinematography for Hugo, looks like Gandalf

-       Really, Whitney Houston helped you tease the In Memoriam segment? Yes she was in The Bodyguard, The Preacher’s Wife, Waiting to Exhale and the yet to be released Sparkle and should have been included..but that really doesn’t show the talent that passed well.

-       Didn’t see the Sacha Baron Cohen interview with Ryan Seacrest until this morning, but weird…definitely. Wouldn’t it have been funnier if he had bodyguards that tackled the guys from the accounting firm with the winners? Maybe trying to replace the briefcases with his own winners? Just sayin…

-       I tweeted last night…why do we wait to get to animated feature at 845 CT? If we are going to get kids at all interested…why didn’t we have that earlier? (Though my daughter did LOVE the early love shown to Hugo.)

-       Glad to see a non political film (in ANY way) win for documentary – though I’m still partial to the not nominated – but Spirit Award winning doc The Interrupters.

-       Hopefully we’ll get the Best Song category right one day (there should have been more than 2 nominees) but the best song won anyway.

The Artist wins 5 Trophies.
-       And Finally…If you want to win the big awards - make sure your movie is good and has some relevance to the movies. – 12/24 winners last night were for films that had to do with the movies in some way, shape or form.

o   The Artist (5) this one is obvious.
o   Hugo(5) also obvious.
o   Beginners(1) features a French actress in Melanie Laurent
o   Midnight in Paris (1) features a screenwriter

All in all a decent end to the year – now on to 2012 movies – I’m sure the odds on next year’s Best Picture winner will be out soon!

Oh...and I'm sure I'll think of more thoughts later -- so follow me on Twitter and Facebook for all the scoops.

Oscar Night

It's the best night of the year for Hollywood, and for those of us that follow the movies. But I think we are ready to go beyond this year.

Having been through the Film Independent Spirit awards yesterday and now getting ready for the big night...some final thoughts and final picks.

I didn't write a full column on picks and misses this year -- but there are some that have to be mentioned.

Let's make a quick PICKS list.

Best Picture
Will Win - The Artist
Should Win - The Descendants
Wish it Was Nominated - The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Best Director
Will Win - Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist
Should Win - Alexander Payne, The Descendants
Wish He Was Nominated - David Fincher, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Best Actor
Will Win - George Clooney, The Descendants

Wish He Was Nominated - Michael Shannon, Take Shelter or Ryan Gosling, The Ides of March or Drive

Best Actress

Wish She Was Nominated - Charlize Theron, Young Adult

Best Supporting Actress

Wish She Was Nominated - Shailene Woodley, The Descendants

Best Supporting Actor
Will Win - Christopher Plummer, Beginners
Should Win - Christopher Plummer, Beginners
Wish He Was Nominated - Albert Brooks, Drive AND Patton Oswalt, Young Adult

And on the other categories...

Random thoughts --

Really Really Really -- have I made it clear....Really -- missing The Interrupters in the Documentary category, but expecting a Paradise Lost 3 win.

Disappointed in the lack of Best song nominees -- but hopeful for Muppet or a Man.

Really seeing a lot of individuals that I LIKE in the crowd...and that is cool.

Wondering if Billy Crystal will be what the Academy has been lacking.

Wondering if the show comes in on schedule.

Sacha Baron Cohen...

What else???

The ceremony is coming soon -- who is your favorite?

More during the show.

Review - Act of Valor

ACTion Packed But Lacking in Delivery

The story of NAVY seals has been told many times before, but never quite this way. This unit is real, real Seals instead of actors – and that is the selling point.

In theaters 2/24
Off on a mission that takes them around the world, this group of Seals and the film Act of Valor will take you behind the scenes of what it’s like to leave your family behind and fight for the very things you believe in.

That’s the hook here, the reality of it all. The directors even introduce the film with the announcement that they didn’t think that actors could deliver the emotional impact that the film needed. They couldn’t deliver the action that they were looking to relate to the audience. And they couldn’t deliver the passion of the profession.

Based on some actual stories the mission takes them around the world and back fighting all sorts of evil, and working to get back home to their families.

Yes, I’m struggling as I write about Act of Valor and the storyline. Yes I’m struggling with many aspects of discussing this film.

First let me say – I loved the action sequences. The directors mentioned in the pre film segment that there was live ammo used at times and it felt real both in sound and look. I felt like we were really following the Seals on their mission.

But the flipside is the film had a less than stellar script and without actors the script didn’t help matters. There was clunky dialogue all over the place, almost as clunky as this review.

So the movie that I wanted to like, turned into some action I did like and some dialogue I really didn’t like. Act of Valor could have used more actors, or at least acting coaches.

If I gave out effort grades, they would get an A for the methods…but unfortunately that isn’t the way this works.  So for the whole of the movie, it is just average. (But of course I will watch it again…I am an action junkie as you would expect from The Common Guy.)

Review - Wanderlust

Lustful but Lacking

George (Paul Rudd) and Linda (Jennifer Aniston) are living the life in New York City.  They’ve just taken the giant leap and bought a place (a studio apartment) and are ready to move forward to take on all comers. But then…Linda’s documentary is turned down by HBO and the government has taken down George’s company. With life crashing down around them they take the only offer that is out there, they head south to move in with George’s obnoxious brother.

A long journey south to Georgia has driven them batty, the only thing that will help is a night in a soft bed and that is where the stumble into Elysium.

Elysium features some of the nicest people they have ever met, even though they are a bit eccentric. But the commune lifestyle isn’t what they were looking for on this trip, so on to the brother’s house. It takes very little time to realize that commune lifestyle is definitely better than George’s brother.

They give the free wheeling commune lifestyle a try for two weeks. Meeting character after character from the guru Seth (Justin Theroux), to the property owner Carvin (Alan Alda).

Seth’s girlfriend Eva (Malin Akerman) has eyes on George and Seth has eyes for Linda. Well since they share everything, that won’t be a problem, will it?

I came from this film virtually speechless.  There are moments where I definitely laughed out loud. But unfortunately, I had to struggle through many weird plot points and unfunny use of male organs. Why is it that everyone wants to shock you with men’s privates, and yes – I’m ducking saying the P word. This is a family blog.

The uneven nature of the film took away the gusto that should have been present. I just didn’t buy into some of the characters, and that lack of investment made some of the scenes that should have been funny, somewhat disappointing.

I’ll definitely give this one another chance, but for now, I wasn’t filled with lust or love and I immediately shaved after seeing it. (The commune lifestyle is not for me!)

J. Edgar meet Martha Marcy May Marlene and Puss in Boots

This Week’s Big Releases
J. Edgar – Rated R (Leonardo DiCaprio, Naomi Watts)
The story of J. Edgar Hoover, the leader of the FBI and a very unique individual told by Director Clint Eastwood with the talented DiCaprio as Hoover.,
Martha Marcy May Marlene – Rated R (Elizabeth Olsen, John Hawkes)
A film that made my 2011 Top 25. Elizabeth Olsen is powerful as a woman drawn into a cult and then struggling to break free while reacclimatizing to society.
The Mighty Macs – Rated G (Carla Gugino, David Boreanaz)
Based on the true story of the 1971-72 Immaculata College women’s basketball team that was one of the original Cinderella stories. I haven’t seen this one, but I want to.
Puss in Boots – Rated PG (Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek)
On Blu Feb. 21
One of the stars of the Shrek films, Puss now gets his own film to tell us how he came to be who he is today. For me it was a step down from the fun that Puss had in the Shrek films, but it’s doing well.
Tower Heist– Rated PG-13 (Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy)
Let me admit, I am a sucker for this one. Just love all the characters here from Stiller and Murphy to Alan Alda, Matthew Broderick and Tea Leoni to name a few. Funnier than I expected, I really enjoyed this – a very repeatable watch kind of film for your collection.
The Way – Rated PG-13 (Emilio Estevez, Martin Sheen)
Talk about surprises; I didn’t see this one coming AT ALL. A poignant tale that tells a great story of a father reconnecting with his son in ways he never imagined. Beautiful to look at, and if you cry much, have a box of Kleenex handy!

Also new this week…
Honey 2 – Rated PG-13 (Katerina Graham, Randy Wayne) They made a sequel to Honey? How could they do such a thing WITHOUT Jessica Alba – ok, I’ll watch anyway.

Inkubus  – Rated R (Robert Englund, William Forsythe) Robert Englund…yes it’s a horror movie.
Matlock: The Seventh Season  – Not Rated (Andy Griffith) This one’s for mom!
Nurse Jackie: Season Three – Not Rated (Edie Falco) Season three of this Showtime series now on DVD.
Rules of Engagement: The Complete Fifth Season – Not Rated (Megyn Price, Patrick Warburton)
The Son of No One– Rated R (Channing Tatum, Al Pacino) How have I not heard about this one…really?

The Space Between – Not Rated – (Melissa Leo)  Love, love, love Melissa Leo!
Weeds: Season Seven – Not Rated – (Mary-Louise Parker)

And Finally
London Boulevard – Rated R (Colin Farrell, Keira Knightley)
This looks like one of those movies that may have slipped beneath the radar – but I could be wrong. Haven’t seen it yet, but I will – and the trailer below – well let’s just say since Keira Knightley kicked a soccer ball in Bend it Like Beckham I’ve been a fan.
Check out the trailer below.

Pick of the Week
This week is a tough one. For repeatability Tower Heist is your candidate but as far as really good movies go. Both Martha Marcy May Marlene and The Way made by best of 2011 list. Martha was much further up it though, but you should see both of them – they are VERRRY different types of journeys.
Thanks!

The Interrupters - Full Movie

I've embedded it below -- One of my favorite films of 2011. The Best Documentary of the Year - PERIOD.
The link below is courtesy of the PBS Frontline web site. The Interrupters was show on there on 2/14. If you haven't seen it  - blow it up to full screen and take the time to experience this. If you have seen it - watch it again. There are two versions on the PBS site a Broadcast and Graphic Language version. I have embedded the version with the language here (I think it helps set the movie -- so I do ask for discretion. Both versions can be found on the PBS Frontline website if you prefer the edited "bleeped" version.

And -- if it moves you -- they have a link to buy the DVD and add it to your collection to show everyone you know! Share it! Watch it! Learn from it! Cease Fire!

Act of Valor - Parachute to the Premiere

Ok, so I saw Act of Valor last night -- can't chat about it for a week or so...but I realized I didn't share anything online yesterday...so here's something cool I found.

It's a video of a parachute jump into the middle of the city for a premiere of the movie. Incredible visuals...not always one of the most interesting vids for the whole 3 1/2 minutes, but the accuracy is amazing with all the structures around.

Check it out...and check out Act of Valor in theaters Feb. 24 (My review will go online then).

Home Screening Room - Take Shelter, The Interrupters are here

Home Screening Room
This Week’s Big Releases
The Rum Diary – Rated R (Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart)
Johnny Depp stars in this twisted, weird and a bit fun tale of a journalist who heads to the Caribbean and finds some interesting topics and jobs awaiting for him.
Take Shelter – Rated R (Michael Shannon, Jessica Chastain) AVAILABLE Saturday 2/11.
One of the best films from 2011 that you probably never heard of. Michael Shannon is a man that is struggling with visions of coming doom for his family. Because of these visions he takes matters into his own hands to protect and provide for his loved ones.  But do they really need the protection, or are there other forces at work. Jessica Chastain is WONDERFUL, Michael Shannon ROCKS and this film is truly tough!
Also new this week…
About Fifty – Rated R (Wendie Malick)
All Things Fall Apart  – Rated R (Curtis Jackson, Mario Van Peebles, Ray Liotta)
Beavis and Butt-head: Volume 4  - The boys are back for more.
Family Matters: The Complete Second Season – Not Rated (Jaleel White, Reginald VelJohnson) – Urkel is back – Did I do that?
Seducing Charlie Barker – Rated R (Daphne Zuniga) – I have no idea if this is good or not, but it has Daphne Zuniga (I will always be a fan of hers since Gross Anatomy!)
UFC 139 – 2 discs of MMA goodness.
Under the Boardwalk: The Monopoly Story – Not Rated – Monopoly, I LOVE IT. Narrated by Zachary Levi it goes into more than you ordinary game. Trailer below for your enjoyment...

And Finally
The Interrupters – Not Rated (Cobe Williams, Ameena Matthews)
This is the best documentary released in 2011 and one of the best films of last year, PERIOD. The story of the violence interrupters in Chicago that shows you individuals CAN make a difference. These people put it all out there to the youth of Chicago, and sometimes it works while others it doesn’t, but at least they are making a difference in some young lives. You must see this film.
Check out the trailer below.

Pick of the Week
Hands down, The Interrupters is my pick of the week you do need to see this film. But, I also love Take Shelter and was obsessed with the performances from Shannon and Chastain. And…well Beavis and Butt-head are still…cool.
Thanks!

Trailer - The Bourne Legacy

Trailer for The Bourne Legacy due out August 3 this year.

Take a look!

What if the Oscars were more like the Grammys?

The Grammys features memorable experiences via live performances each and every year. Some of them we remember, pairings of iconic superstars from different eras, and some of them we try to forget – last night’s Nicki Minaj performance.

But let’s imagine if there were more performances on the Oscar telecast and shorter speeches.

Meryl Streep in a scene from a slapstick comedy alongside Jim Carrey.

Jack Nicholson being “Jack” next to Helen Mirren.

The long overdue pairing of Morgan Freeman and Betty White in a suspense thriller with sound from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross performed LIVE.

Letting the costume designers, set decorators, sound mixers and all the rest of Hollywood’s best at their craft, recreate onstage, what they create onscreen.

Ok, so I’m making a ridiculous point here – but it would be nice to see more of the stars at the top of their game, even if only in clip form..

It’s the movies, and their performances that are memorable – much like it’s the MUSIC that is remembered on the Grammys and less about who really won the awards.

The Academy doesn’t need to go goofy with this, but I’d love to see more of the medium I love. (And while they are at it – only 2 songs were nominated – they should be performed!)

Ok, so I'm being a bit goofy...or am I?

Home Screening Room - An Anonymous look at Twilight with Special Guest Lady and the Tramp

This Week’s Big Releases
Anonymous – Rated PG-13 (Vanessa Redgrave, Rhys Ifans)
Was Shakespeare who we think he was? Or was there someone else behind the brilliant words that became immortalized. A really good film that is worth checking out even for people that aren’t typical Shakespeare aficionados; you should check this out. READ THE THEATRICAL REVIEW HERE
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 – Rated PG-13 (Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner) AVAILABLE Saturday 2/11.
Ok, so my review of the theatrical release was pretty harsh. And I’ve been a big critic of this latest film (I am interested to see how they end this though). BluRay release “could” mean more of what the fans want…or more of what I want or ??? READ MY THEATRICAL REVIEW HERE (Don’t read if you are a TwiHard).
A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas – Rated R (John Cho, Kal Penn, Neil Patrick Harris)
More with Harold and Kumar – heard good things but it was not shown do me during theatrical release.
Also new this week…
5 Star Day – Rated NR (Cam Gigandet, Jena Malone)
Cyberbully  – Rated NR (Emily Osment, Kay Panabaker)
Downton Abbey: Season 2
Father Dowling Mysteries: The First Season (Tom Bosley) – Have to list this one, as Mom was a BIG fan.
Fireflies in the Garden – Rated R (Julia Roberts, Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe)

Geek Charming – Rated NR (Sarah Hyland, Matt Prokop)
Lady and the Tramp – Rated G – First time on Blu Ray for the classic romantic animated film.

A Warrior’s Heart– Rated PG (Kellan Lutz, Adam Beach, Gabrielle Anwar, Ashley Greene)
And Finally
The Rebound – Rated R (Catherine Zeta-Jones, Justin Bartha)
I’ve always loved Catherine Zeta-Jones, here she is striking out on a new life and a rebound relationship, but with the nanny? Not sure how I didn’t see this one come out but the trailer is intriguing – even if it looks like it is a couple years old.
Check out the trailer below.

Pick of the Week
How can you not add Lady and the Tramp to your Blu Ray collection? That’s the big one this week – though TwiHards would disagree with me.
Thanks!

Review - Big Miracle

It's No Miracle, Big Miracle Works For Families

Big Miracle, Opens 2/3/12
Small town Alaska has big stories for a young reporter. Adam Carlson (John Krasinski) has just finished his riveting story on avocados in the far reaching part of the world. He’s off to get footage of an amazing snowmobile trickster who just drives in circles. But in the distance he sees and hears something a bit odd. Turns out there are three grey whales (Mom, Dad and Baby) that are stuck in the ice and can’t get home.

When he shoots what seems to be a novel public interest piece on these whales it gets picked up on a national level and becomes larger than life. It attracts the attention of Tom Brokaw and journalists across the continental US. Even up and coming reporter Jill Jerard (Kristen Bell), who Adam has a bit of a crush on, comes to the great northern reaches of Alaska to report on the story. Quite possibly the most interesting person who picks up on the story is Adam’s ex, Rachel (Drew Barrymore) who is an active Greenpeace member.

Now with a diverse group of individuals that includes reporters, native fisherman, Greenpeace, the US military and a large oil tycoon must work together to try to save these great beasts. Will they get them to safety in time?

Based on a true story that captivated America in 1988, Big Miracle tries to pull all the heartstrings during its runtime. And while it is effective in its storytelling, it seems to lack in its realism and attention to detail. Living in a cold weather climate, I know the effects of being outside, and when I see Drew Barrymore go under water in the icy below zero temps with exposed skin, I just cringe. It was an easy thing and should have been caught.

Though I’m picky about the attention to detail that was lacking, the story is a little gem. It’s a touching story that will grip families. Maybe not to the extent they are portrayed onscreen, but it is an attention grabber. Who doesn’t like whales? Right?

Krasiniski is likable in his role as Adam, but I didn’t totally by off on his relationship with Drew Barrymore’s Rachel. The fun in the film is with the small roles. The Stephen Root, Ted Danson, Tim Blake Nelson roles all packed a cool punch and really made things interesting.

Overall, take the family to Big Miracle – or at least gather everyone round when it comes to DVD or VOD. It’s a crowd pleasing movie that you will go out with a level of enjoyment and remind you why animal movies grab us as viewers.

Home Screening Room - Drive home The Double for Treasure Buddies

This Week’s Big Releases
The Big Year – Rated PG (Jack Black, Steve Martin, Owen Wilson)
So three men that are rivals are trying to one up each other with ideas…or something like that. This one didn’t screen locally; so I can’t tell you any more than that.
The Double – Rated PG-13 (Richard Gere, Topher Grace)
Did a full review when this came out in limited theatrical release – might have been too hard on the final grade, but if you’re interested read the review first. The story of a secret agent and his quest to keep his identity secret
Dream House – Rated PG-13 (Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, Naomi Watts)
This didn’t screen for the press, and I have yet to see it – but come on…the reviews out there can’t be right….it looks so good, and I love all three actors.
Drive  – Rated R (Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston)
The hippest, coolest and downright BEST film released today. Drive is a cerebral film that walks you through some of the best performances of the year. Ryan Gosling is perfect as the haunted Driver and Albert Brooks SHOULD HAVE BEEN nominated for an Academy Award here.
In Time – Rated PG-13 (Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Cillian Murphy))
I’m really starting to dig Justin Timberlake (the actor) – but didn’t get a chance to see this thriller on time being the biggest asset anyone controls.
The Thing – Rated R (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton)
Remake, but Mary Elizabeth Winstead involved – and I like her. Didn’t get to see it as I had a schedule conflict when it screened.
Also new this week…
Chalet Girl – Rated NR (Felicity Jones, Ed Westwick)
Texas Killing Fields  – Rated R (Sam Worthington, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chloe Grace Moretz)
You and I – Rated R (Mischa Barton, Anton Yelchin)
And Finally
Treasure Buddies – Rated G
Ok, I had to post the trailer for this here…yes it’s because my daughter loves the buddies. Snow Buddies, Santa Buddies…it doesn’t matter – I’ll have HER review of this up later this week.
Check out the trailer below.

Pick of the Week
Driveis an intense and VERY cool movie. Actors should watch this one to see how it’s done! I have to admit I’m curious about In Time. And of course, I have a now 7 ½ year old that loves puppies so she would say Treasure Buddies is a must.
Thanks!
